Syonen Sansou

It takes about 30 minutes by car from the Yumeji Art Museum - Honkan in Okayama-shi to the Yumeji Art Museum - Bunkan in Setouchi-shi, Okayama. Visitors may use the same admission ticket for both the "Yumeji Seika" and the "Syonen Sansou". Please buy an admission ticket at the "Yumeji Seika”.
◇Yumeji Seika
The "Yumeji Seika" is the house in which Yumeji Takehisa was born and lived in until he was 16 years old. It was built about 250 years ago. It is unusual these days to build a traditional Japanese house with Kayabukiyane (a thatched roof). Please enjoy the historical atmosphere such as the appearance of the building and the childhood room of Yumeji. In addition, Yumeji’s works such as hanging scrolls, Byoubu, and various sketches, are exhibited in the “Yumeji Seika”. A monument which states "Yumeji Takehisa was born here,” inscribed by Ikuma Arishima at the entrance of the “Yumeji Seika” and welcomes you.
◇Syonen Sansou
The "Syonen Sansou" is a Western style architecture house designed by Yumeji Takehisa. In 1979, in commemoration of the 95th anniversary of Yumeji's birth, the house with the studio that Yumeji built in Tokyo in 1924 was reconstructed with the cooperation of Mr. Fujihiko Takehisa, the second son of Yumeji. Yumeji named the "Syonen Sansou" from a passage from the Chinese poem of "Suimin” because it was his wish to spend the long days of spring like the days of his boyhood. Also, the trees such as Smilacaceaes and Sawtooth Oaks, which Yumeji planted, remain around the "Syonen Sansou" and significantly grown. The "Syonen Sansou" surrounded by the copse gives you a feeling of the life of Yumeji. The self-portraits of Yumeji and the photographs taken by him are exhibited there as well. Visiting the Syonen Sansou allows you to experience what Yumeji’s life was like.
